At a Disney fan conference in Anaheim on Saturday, Walt Disney (DIS.N) opened a new tab and Square Enix (9684.T), a Japanese video game firm, showcased the upcoming “Kingdom Hearts 4” game as they commemorated the upcoming 25th anniversary of the popular franchise.
Disney’s executive vise president of games and digital entertainment, Sean Shoptaw, stated in the company’s strategy report on Thursday that “Kingdom Hearts” is one of nine video games that have made over $1 billion at retail.
The action role-playing series “Kingdom Hearts” follows Sora, a boy whose home planet is destroyed by creatures known as Heartless. It blends characters and places from the Square Enix “Final Fantasy” franchise and Disney movies.
“Kingdom Hearts 4” follows Sora as he is stuck in Quadratum, a made-up version of Shibuya, a real-life business district in Tokyo, Japan, following the events of the third game.A panel at Disney’s D23 entertainment event on Saturday unveiled a four-minute teaser for Kingdom Hearts 4, which will make its premiere in 2027. The trailer expanded on the 90 seconds of footage that was revealed on Friday and featured a new environment based on Pixar’s “Coco.”
Along with original “Kingdom Hearts” characters and glimpses of other worlds, the expanded film reconnected fans with well-known characters including Donald, Goofy, King Mickey, and Hades.
The franchise’s creator, Tetsuya Nomura, was a surprise guest on the panel. He stated that he wanted to include Disney games that have strong gameplay synergy.
“We felt that ‘Coco’ would be the best world that would really help to achieve that,” he said, referring to the movie about a youngster who travels to the “Land of the Dead” in search of his renowned singer great-great-grandfather.
The new Paper Mickey Mouse universe, in which Mickey is a playable character in a storybook setting for the first time, was another topic discussed by panelists.
In contrast to the series’ conventional adventure style, players can go thru wall fissures, change into an airplane, and solve puzzles.
