Uber (UBER.N), opens new tab, Verne, and Pony.ai (PONY.O) said on Wednesday that they had introduced autonomous trips in Zagreb, making it the first city in Europe where consumers may reserve a self-driving car using the Uber app.
According to the companies, riders can currently reserve robotaxis in important parts of Zagreb, such as the city center, and service availability and geographic coverage are anticipated to grow over time.
As the firms strive toward fully autonomous operations, a licensed operator will be on board to monitor the vehicle during the initial phase, they said.
The autonomous driving technology is supplied by the Chinese robotaxi company Pony.ai, the fleet is owned and operated by the Croatian startup Verne, and Uber incorporates the service within its ride-hailing platform.
The debut extends the cooperation that was announced in March, and the firms intend to spread the service to more locations in Europe.
Riders can reserve the service by using the Uber app to request an UberX or Comfort ride. When a self-driving car is available, the Uber app will display vehicle data and instructions.
